Dance WS “Kami-umezu Onidaiko”
Onidaiko, which literally translates as “demon drumming,” is one of Sado Island’s iconic, beloved folk traditions. It’s an auspicious demon deity dance set to the beat of a taiko drum. This rousing dance is said to bring good health and fortune.
There are some 120 styles upheld on Sado, and this workshop will focus on the dance unique to Kami-umezu near Ryotsu. After debuting on the EC lineup in 2019, this year the demon troupe from Kami-umezu are back, excited to lead this workshop online!
It’s a special opportunity to connect with people on Sado Island, throughout Japan, and around the world online to learn and enjoy a unique folk art together. We hope you’ll take part!
